In 1951 this Dartmouth College junior was a member of Corny McFadden and Bill Turner’s famed Greenland expedition that returned with 11 gyrfalcons for falconry. Greenland was thereafter a constant in Bill’s life; he became fluent in Danish and conducted Master’s research on Greenland and Iceland Fisheries. Among many other accomplishments, he founded and led the Greenland Peregrine Falcon Survey (1972-1998). Bill first trapped peregrines on Assateague Island in 1955, and later banded migrating tundra peregrines in the Dry Tortugas, FL. In 1990-96 he directed a long-term study of the effects of military activities on birds of prey in Idaho. A founding member of Earthspan, Bill worked with us in the field and mentored many of us on the tundra and elsewhere, leading by example and making us better biologists and individuals. Truly a scholar, gentleman and friend in every sense of the word, we will sorely miss his fellowship and steadying influence.
